The Cat With Twenty Toes

A children’s book celebrating physical differences and promoting diversity.

“The Cat With Twenty Toes” (written for children ages 3-10, with a foreword for adults) celebrates physical differences and promotes diversity through the use of fun, rhyming verse and colorful, whimsical illustrations featuring a metaphorical, polydactyl cat named Sookie. The book is dedicated to the author’s brother, Sgt. Brad Lovitt (1961-2020), a 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, whose cat inspired the book.

“The Cat With Twenty Toes” is available in softcover ($11.95), hardcover ($19.95) and Kindle e-book ($5.99) versions on Amazon. For autographed softcover and hardcover books, contact Tony Lovitt: [email protected]

My late brother’s polydactyl cat inspired me to write “The Cat With Twenty Toes,” using “Sookie” as a metaphor for the broad spectrum of physical differences among living creatures. When we see an elephant, for example, we accept its distinctive characteristics – large ears, trunk, tusks, etc. Why, I wondered, couldn’t we be just as accepting and non-judgmental of people whose physical characteristics are different than our own? That’s the essence of “The Cat With Twenty Toes.” I hope it’s successful in imparting a message to readers that celebrates our many physical differences and encourages diversity.

This book is dedicated to my brother, who succumbed to cancer in 2020. He treated everyone with respect and dignity. These days we could use more people like him.
